These records contain the amount of registered debt of the commonwealth of Virginia recorded in the books of the second auditor in the name of the several literary institutions (colleges) of the state with the amount of accrued interest thereon. In addition, school quotas for the period 1825-1837 are included.

An act of the General Assembly approved March 23, 1839, provided for additional capital for the James River and Kanawha Company. The Company was given full power to borrow on the credit of the corporate funds, $1,500,000.
